Barack and Michelle Obama Once Again, Set the Record Straight on Divorce Buzz — With Humor and Heart
The Obamas playfully addressed the chatter about their marriage on an episode of Michelle Obama's podcast.
Barack and Michelle Obama aren’t just addressing those persistent divorce rumors — they’re shutting them down with laughs, love, and a bit of sibling banter.
The power couple appeared together on the July 14 episode of Michelle Obama’s "IMO" podcast, where the former First Lady was joined by her brother and co-host, Craig Robinson. As the show began, Michelle teased a “very special guest” — and sure enough, former President Barack Obama walked in, greeted his wife with a warm hug and kiss, and took a seat at the mic.
Craig jumped in right away with a joke: “Wait, you guys like each other?”
“That’s what the rumors say,” Michelle quipped.
Barack added with a smile, “She took me back. It was touch and go for a while.”
Michelle playfully warned him not to “start,” but the jokes continued. Craig said it was nice to see the couple together in the same room — prompting Michelle to laugh and say, “I know, because when we’re not, folks assume we’re divorced.”
Craig shared how strangers have even approached him with concern over his sister’s marriage. He recalled one woman in Wichita asking, “What did he do?” Craig replied with mock indignation, “Why do you assume he messed up? Maybe it was her.”
Michelle chimed in, “Or maybe no one messed up.”
Craig admitted he played along just so he could share the funny story later. “She was so happy when I told her you guys were fine — you’d think I gave her a Christmas gift,” he said.
Barack, amused, said these rumors often fly under his radar. “Someone will mention it to me and I’m like, ‘What are you talking about?’”
That’s when Michelle took a moment to clear the air once and for all.
“There hasn’t been one moment in our marriage where I thought about quitting on my man,” she said. “We’ve gone through tough times, amazing times, countless adventures. I’ve grown into a better woman because of the man I married.”
Barack, touched, interrupted her with a chuckle, “OK, don’t make me cry now — not at the beginning of the show.”
The Obamas, married since 1992, are parents to daughters Malia, 27, and Sasha, 24. Despite the public speculation, their bond appears as strong as ever.
Michelle addressed the origin of some of the divorce chatter during an April appearance on “Work in Progress with Sophia Bush.” She believes people misread her autonomy — especially when she chooses not to appear at certain events — as a sign of trouble in her marriage.
Notably, Michelle did not attend the funeral service for former President Jimmy Carter or Donald Trump’s inauguration, sparking whispers among the public.
“The minute I say ‘no’ to something,” she said, “people start writing their own stories. It’s hard for folks to accept that I’m making choices for myself — especially as a woman. So instead, they jump to, ‘She must be leaving him.’”
In reality, the Obamas are choosing each other — and laughing through the noise.
