Democrat James Talarico has pulled off a stunning political upset, flipping a U.S. Senate seat in Republican-dominated Texas. The projected victory would end decades of Republican control, overcome a reported $168 million advertising offensive backed by billionaire Elon Musk, and deliver a major setback to the MAGA movement in a state Donald Trump carried three times.

Talarico, a state legislator and seminarian, defeated Trump-backed Attorney General Ken Paxton after building a national profile around economic inequality and political corruption. His campaign combined Christian values with an appeal to voters frustrated by conventional partisan politics.

Rather than emphasizing divisions between Democrats and Republicans, Talarico framed the election as a struggle between the wealthy and everyone else. He argued that America’s richest 1% benefit when ordinary citizens fight among themselves instead of holding powerful interests accountable.

Meanwhile, divisions within the Republican Party were evident long before Election Day.

Paxton had spent years confronting personal and political controversies, yet Trump endorsed him over Republican Senator John Cornyn in the primary. During the general election, several influential Republicans openly supported Talarico rather than rally behind Paxton.

In 2023, the Republican-controlled Texas House impeached Paxton, although the state Senate subsequently acquitted him. Trump later claimed credit for influencing lawmakers during the proceedings. Paxton’s estranged wife, state Senator Angela Paxton, also publicly announced her decision to seek a divorce on biblical grounds. She later appeared in a Republican campaign advertisement encouraging support for the party’s candidates without mentioning her husband.

Cornyn pledged loyalty to the Republican ticket but never explicitly endorsed Paxton. He also participated in a fundraiser alongside former President George W. Bush for Republican Senate candidates that excluded Paxton.

Despite considerable financial backing, including substantial super PAC support from Musk, Paxton failed to secure victory.

The result represents a significant Democratic breakthrough in a state that has long symbolized Trump’s political strength.

Talarico’s success was driven partly by remarkable voter participation. Early voting figures indicated record turnout in numerous Texas counties, while Latino voters showed signs of returning to the Democratic Party after supporting Trump in 2024. Hispanic participation increased significantly, particularly among younger voters and residents who had not voted in the previous two election cycles.

Momentum developed early in Talarico’s campaign. When he announced his candidacy in Round Rock in 2025, approximately 1,500 supporters attended a rally that same day. His campaign subsequently broke fundraising records, drawing substantial contributions from small-dollar donors nationwide.

Talarico also pursued independent voters and Republicans dissatisfied with Paxton’s controversies and decades of Republican leadership in Texas. His supporters included Barbara Bush and Neil Bush, two members of the prominent Texas political family.

His campaign deliberately avoided relying on prominent Democratic figures from outside Texas, seeking to prevent Republicans from linking him too closely with national party leaders. Unlike candidates elsewhere, Talarico did not campaign alongside former President Barack Obama, who attracted enormous crowds in states including Michigan.

Nevertheless, Talarico attracted significant national attention.

Joe Rogan, who endorsed Trump in 2024, welcomed Talarico onto his podcast and encouraged him to consider running for president. Planned appearances with Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel also generated controversy after television broadcasts were blocked over interpretations of federal equal-time requirements. The dispute increased online interest, producing millions of views and additional campaign donations.

Texas ultimately became one of the most consequential electoral setbacks for Trump.
