Progressive Firebrand Analilia Mejia Secures Decisive Victory in New Jersey, Signaling Trouble for Trump Allies
The Democratic will fill the seat held by Gov. Mikie Sherrill.

Progressive organizer Analilia Mejia delivered a commanding win in New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District, stepping into the seat once held by Governor Mikie Sherrill and reinforcing a growing wave of Democratic momentum ahead of the midterm elections.
Mejia defeated Republican Joe Hathaway, a Randolph Township councilmember, in Thursday’s special election—an outcome that underscores rising voter frustration with President Donald Trump and his political orbit.
Taking the stage in her victory speech, Mejia didn’t hold back. She cast her opponent and leading Republican figures—including Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson—as part of a dangerous political movement willing to erode democratic norms. She also pointed to billionaire power brokers like Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk as emblematic of a system she argues is out of balance.
“These are radicals willing to undermine our democracy and act without consequence,” Mejia said. “We will not stand by—we will resist.”
Hathaway conceded the race but made clear the fight isn’t over. With a primary set for June and a general election in November, he vowed to challenge Mejia again, promising to scrutinize her record while continuing to campaign on affordability, public safety, and government accountability.
Mejia entered the race with momentum after a surprise primary victory earlier this year, emerging from a crowded Democratic field despite being outspent and less well-known than several rivals. That upset win helped position her as the clear frontrunner in a district that leans reliably Democratic.
Republicans attempted to frame Mejia as too ideologically extreme for the district, tying her to progressive figures like New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and branding her a “socialist”—a label she rejects. But that line of attack failed to resonate in a district where Democrats hold a significant voter registration advantage.
Even efforts to present Hathaway as a moderate Republican willing to break with Trump didn’t gain traction. Within minutes of polls closing, the race was called for Mejia. By the evening, she held a lead of more than 35 points—a landslide that left little doubt about voter sentiment.
Mejia’s background reflects years of deep involvement in progressive organizing. She has served as co-executive director of the Center for Popular Democracy and previously worked as national political director for Bernie Sanders during his 2020 presidential campaign. Her platform centers on economic justice, immigration reform, and expanding social safety nets, including support for Medicare for All and national paid sick leave.
Throughout the campaign, Mejia leaned into a message focused on affordability and opposition to what she calls “MAGA extremism.” She also advocated for bold immigration changes, including abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Her victory marks a historic milestone: Mejia will become the first Latina to represent New Jersey’s 11th District and only the second Latina in the state’s congressional delegation.
Still, her political future will be tested again soon. She must compete in a June primary to secure the nomination for a full term beginning in 2027, with several challengers already entering the race. Hathaway, undeterred by his loss, is preparing for a potential rematch in November.
Outside political spending, which played a role in the earlier primary, could again become a factor. Groups like the American Israel Public Affairs Committee have signaled continued interest in the race, particularly given Mejia’s outspoken criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza. This stance has already drawn sharp attacks from her opponents.
For now, however, Mejia’s decisive victory stands as a clear signal: progressive candidates are not only viable—they’re winning, and they’re reshaping the political landscape in the process.
