Trump Demands Jimmy Kimmel’s Firing After Controversial Melania Widow Joke
The president echoed the first lady’s call for ABC to cancel ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ in the wake of the WHCD shooting.
Donald Trump is once again targeting late-night television, this time calling for Jimmy Kimmel to be “immediately fired” following a joke that has ignited backlash from both the former president and the first lady.
The renewed feud escalated after Melania Trump publicly condemned Kimmel over remarks made during a recent monologue tied to the aftermath of a shooting near the White House Correspondents’ Dinner (WHCD). Shortly after her statement, Trump took to Truth Social, amplifying the outrage and demanding action from ABC and its parent company.
In his post, Trump described Kimmel’s segment as “shocking” and accused the host of crossing a dangerous line. He pointed to a digitally altered clip featuring Melania and their son, Barron Trump, before zeroing in on a remark he labeled offensive and inappropriate. Trump went further, suggesting the joke contributed to a climate that could incite violence—an allegation that significantly raises the stakes in an already heated clash between politics and entertainment.
The controversy arrives on the heels of a serious security incident. Authorities recently arrested a suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, who allegedly opened fire near the WHCD venue and was reportedly targeting members of Trump’s circle. Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed investigators are treating the case as a targeted threat, intensifying concerns about political rhetoric and public safety.
Melania Trump’s response was equally forceful. In her statement, she accused Kimmel of using his platform to spread division, arguing that his comments were not comedy but part of a broader erosion of civility in American discourse. She also criticized ABC for continuing to air his show, calling on the network to take responsibility for what she described as repeated misconduct.
This is not the first time Kimmel has found himself at the center of controversy. The host previously faced backlash over politically charged jokes, including one tied to the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, which led to a temporary suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Upon returning, Kimmel acknowledged the criticism, conceding that his remarks may have been “ill-timed or unclear.”
Conservative legal voices have now joined the chorus. Daniel Suhr, president of the Center for American Rights, argued that Kimmel has repeatedly abused his platform to push a partisan agenda. He warned that if ABC fails to act, pressure could mount for stricter regulatory oversight of broadcast networks.
ABC and Kimmel have yet to respond publicly to the latest round of criticism.
The feud between Trump and Kimmel is nothing new. Since 2016, the two have traded barbs, with Kimmel frequently using his monologues to mock Trump and Trump responding in kind—often calling for the show’s cancellation. The former president has also celebrated the downfall of other late-night critics, including Stephen Colbert, whose The Late Show is set to end next month.
Meanwhile, the WHCD shooting underscores a more serious backdrop to the ongoing media clash. It marks the third major breach involving an armed individual targeting Trump during his second term. Previous incidents include a 2024 rally shooting in Pennsylvania involving Thomas Matthew Crooks and another armed threat at a golf event involving Ryan Wesley Routh.
As political tensions continue to collide with entertainment, the line between satire and provocation is once again under scrutiny—raising broader questions about accountability, free speech, and the real-world consequences of words spoken on the national stage.
